The Birkbeck way of learning voted number one by students

Birkbeck, University of London, has been voted number one in London by its students

Birkbeck, University of London, has been voted number one in London by its students in the National Student Survey published today.

The College, where teaching takes place in the evenings, came first in this year’s national poll for overall satisfaction among multi-faculty higher education institutions in London. Measured out of five, Birkbeck's overall satisfaction score was 4.3 – up from 4.2 last year. This rating places Birkbeck above LSE, UCL and King’s College London, and joint first alongside Imperial, Queen Mary, Royal Holloway and Brunel for overall satisfaction. Students also ranked Birkbeck number one in London for finding their course intellectually stimulating.

Birkbeck’s evening-taught degrees are highly popular with students who want more from their university experience: one that will give them prestigious qualifications and quality teaching, as well as real opportunities for future career development and the chance to study alongside other motivated and ambitious classmates.

Birkbeck teaches all of its degrees in the evening – giving students the opportunity to study at one of the world’s top research-intensive universities and to move forward with their career and life goals at the same time.

A wide variety of students study at Birkbeck; from young people starting out on their careers who want to gain experience in the workplace and get ahead of the competition; to working Londoners keen to improve their chance of promotion or to change direction in their careers; to people who missed out on university education the first time around.

They are keen to learn from Birkbeck’s leading academics and from each other. Students’ experiences in the workplace and the wider world mean that discussions not only cover the latest academic theory, but also how that theory relates to the workplace and the wider world, making for a richer and more insightful university experience.

This year’s National Student Survey results have been welcomed by Birkbeck’s students and staff alike. Former student Matthew Eyre began studying at Birkbeck aged 32, graduated with a First, and has never looked back. He said: “What makes Birkbeck an ideal choice for both full-time and part-time students is the amazing support that it offers its students. It comes as no surprise to me that it was ranked number one in London for student satisfaction. For people who think that university is not for them, studying at Birkbeck is the ideal opportunity. I left school at 17 and I always thought university was not for me, but I took to it like a fish to water.”

Professor Sue Jackson, Birkbeck’s Pro-Vice-Master, Learning and Teaching, said: “We are delighted that our students rate their experiences at Birkbeck so highly. Our students may be aged 18 to 80, of all backgrounds and professions, but what they share is a passion for learning and a commitment to changing their lives. They’re incredibly hard working; juggling jobs and other daytime commitments while studying in the evenings at Birkbeck. We’ve been London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education for almost 200 years, and pride ourselves on giving every one of them the best opportunity to succeed. I’m very much looking forward to welcoming our new and returning students to Birkbeck at the start of the new academic year.”
