School of Law PhD students host Law and Images conference
The conference, 'Law and Image II: Representing the Limits of the Nation-State', was held on Thursday 16th June.
Two School of Law PhD students Kanika Sharma and Ozan Kamiloglu organised a two day event at Birkbeck called 'Law and Image II: Representing the Limits of the Nation-State'.
On the first day, following from the successful Law and Image symposium in 2015, Law and Image II attempted to analyse the relation between law, images and the nation-state.
Papers covered a wide variety of topics from the black lives matter movement in USA, to the Magna Carta exhibit celebrating 800 years of the document in the UK , to analyses of scenes of terrorism all over the world.
Speakers included Nick Mirzoeff from New York University, Sumathi Ramaswamy from Duke University, and Joseba Zualika from the University of Nevada.
On the second day the focus shifted to moving images, and in collaboration with the Derek Jarman Lab, a workshop was held for the PG students at the Law School to explore the relation between law and films, and the use of moving images as a source of research in academia.
The workshop ended with a practical session where students were taught camera techniques and shot their own short documentary videos.
