Renewable energy expert gives guest lecture

Juliet Davenport, founder and CEO of the UK’s ground-breaking renewable energy company Good Energy, recently delivered a guest lecture as part of Birkbeck’s postgraduate module on Energy and Climate Change.

An alumna of Birkbeck, Ms Davenport talked about her experience of the UK energy market and her vision for low-carbon energy production in the context of the UK Climate Change Act and the current United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban.

Ms Davenport developed an interest in climate change while studying Atmospheric Physics at Merton College Oxford. Not wanting to follow a pure science career path related to climate change, she took a Masters degree in Economics and Environmental Economics at Birkbeck. The economics knowledge she gained led to her founding Good Energy in 1999 with the clear aim of making a difference to climate change and speeding up the UK’s commitment to renewable energy. Good Energy was the first supplier to provide purely renewable energy to UK households.

“I am delighted that Juliet Davenport was able to contribute to our postgraduate module,” said Paul Elsner, of Birkbeck’s Department of Geography, Environment, and Development Studies. “To hear from an alumna who has been so successful in this field, and to have someone of her expertise sharing her experiences was both inspiring and motivational for students currently on the course.”

The lecture was held on Tuesday 6 December at lecture hall B36 in Malet Street, Birkbeck University of London.
