Birkbeck is sad to announce the death of Professor Patrick McAuslan MBE, who passed away on Saturday 11 January, after a short illness.

Professor McAuslan was instrumental in the establishment of Birkbeck’s School of Law in 1993 and was a leading world expert in land law, land reform and planning law.

Professor Patricia Tuitt, Executive Dean of the School of Law, said: “We are deeply saddened by the news of Professor McAuslan’s death. He was a wonderful colleague and friend, and a passionate campaigner for social justice and development through land reform. Professor McAuslen’s prolific writings on land reform and the advice he provided to many governments over the years means that he leaves behind a strong and inspiring legacy.”

Professor David Latchman, Master of Birkbeck, said: “Professor McAuslan will be much missed by his colleagues and students. His contribution to Birkbeck cannot be overestimated and we are indebted to him for his work over the last 21 years to establish and develop the School of Law into the thriving academic environment which it is today.”
