Professor Bill Bowring awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences
Professor Bowring is a leading expert in the UK on legal and human rights issues in Russia and the countries of the Former Soviet Union, and Eastern and Central Europe.
Bill Bowring, Professor of Law at Birkbeck, has been conferred as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS), alongside 68 other leading social scientists. Professor Bowring is Director of the LLM/MA in Human Rights at Birkbeck, and a leading expert in the UK on legal and human rights issues in Russia and the countries of the Former Soviet Union, and Eastern and Central Europe.
His research is particularly interested in minority rights and international law, and is enriched by his practice as a barrister, through which he has taken many cases to the European Court of Human Rights against Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Russia and Turkey. He has also frequently acted as an expert for the Council of Europe, OSCE, European Union, and United Nations, as well as advising the UK government.
He said: “I am honoured and delighted to have been made a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and to find myself in such good company, with several socio-legal friends and colleagues in the list of new Fellows. I am especially glad that this Academy has recognised the inter-disciplinary nature of my work as an activist and a scholar, ‘working on legal and human rights issues in Russia, both in practice and in theory.’”
