Benedetta Ciaccia Memorial Fund established by

4 October 2005 A Birkbeck student, Benedetta Ciaccia, was killed in the Aldgate Tube explosion in July. She had been studying for a Foundation Degree in IT at the College, which she passed with a mark of Merit, but sadly she died without knowing of her academic success. The College and her former employer, Pearson, the international media company, have established a fund in her memory. The income from the fund will establish an annual prize for the Best Final Year Student on the Foundation Degree in IT, at £250 a year. The fund will also be used to assist students who encounter hardship while studying on the same or related courses, with support up to the full fee payable to the College. All members of the College are invited to contribute and Birkbeck will match any donations from its staff and students. Pearson, for whom Benedetta worked for six years, has already made a generous donation, joining Birkbeck in supporting the Memorial Fund. The recipient of the first Best Student award will be selected at the Foundation Degree Examination Board each year and presented at the annual graduation ceremony. The awards for hardship will be managed by the College Hardship Committee. Professor David Latchman Donations can be made to the Memorial Fund using a gift form - click
