Birkbeck students learn about Enterprise Development in Haringey

Haringey residents being taught by Birkbeck in Tottenham had guest lecture from Head of Economic Development and Growth for Haringey

18 Haringey residents, who are enrolled on the Higher Education Introductory Studies (HEIS) certificate programme being taught by Birkbeck at 639 Enterprise Centre on Tottenham High Road, learned more about Haringey Council’s plans for Enterprise Development this week, when Vicky Clark, Head of Economic Development and Growth for Haringey, was a guest speaker at their Monday evening lecture.

The students, who are all enrolled on the certificate’s business pathway and hope to progress onto the second year of Birkbeck’s part-time BSc Business at the College’s central London campus next year, heard about Haringey Council’s plans for regeneration in Tottenham with a focus on the development of business and enterprise in the area.

Dr Kerry Harman, Programme Director of the HEIS certificate, said: “Many people haven’t had the chance to study at university, for a range of reasons, and often assume they need A-levels to commence a degree. This is definitely not the case. The Higher Education Introductory Studies programme provides students without A-levels with the confidence and skills for ongoing successful study at university and a progression pathway into degree study”.

Vicky Clark said: "Bringing Birkbeck to Tottenham is one of the economic development team's proudest achievements and a great way to help people improve their prospects (and enjoy learning). It was a real pleasure to meet the students and I hope we will have many chances to meet in future as they embark on businesses or careers in the area."

Student Jyoti Thanki said: “Vicky provided an insightful and promising briefing on Haringey Council’s future planning strategies and vision for the borough”. Her classmate, Nancy Badu, added: “This course is the best thing that has happened to for a long stretch of time. It has awakened me from a long slumber and given me a new sense of hope. It is never too late to learn. Thanks for this wonderful opportunity.”

Haringey Council has supported each of the students on the HEIS certificate with a £2000 bursary towards their fees.
