Graduation puts a spring in the step

Graduates are formally celebrating their academic qualification at seven ceremonies across three days from 24 to 26 April.

Birkbeck graduates toss their hats in celebration at Graduation in April 2018.

Around 900 graduates will be celebrating their achievements as they attend a series of ceremonies next week, during Birkbeck’s spring Graduation Week.

The former students will receive personal congratulations from the Master of Birkbeck, Professor David Latchman CBE, during seven ceremonies over the course of three days, from Tuesday 24 to Thursday 26 April.

In all, 2905 guests - graduates plus their friends and family - are to attend the events which mark the culmination of their studies and also illustrate the international diversity of the College’s community, with this month’s celebrants drawn from a diverse range of more than 100 nations, including eSwatini (Swaziland), Mauritius, Iraq and the Philippines.

Sizeable contingents from Greece, Iran, Italy, the US, China and Nigeria will be among those receiving their qualifications during Graduation Week.

Around four in ten of those graduating are under the age of 30 and almost half are between 31 and 50. Just over 3% are over the age of 60.

Of those graduates based in London, Hackney tops the list in terms of the highest number of graduating students living in the borough, followed by Lambeth, Barnet and Lewisham.

Following the success of previous ceremonies, this April’s graduation ceremonies will also be live-streamed online, enabling family and friends across the world to share in the excitement of the occasion.

In addition, two new Fellows are receiving their awards at ceremonies throughout the week.

Commenting on this spring’s graduation ceremonies, Professor David Latchman CBE, Master of Birkbeck, said: “Once again, the diversity of the body of graduates at these ceremonies makes clear the welcoming and inclusive environment we work hard to maintain at Birkbeck, continuing our founding mission to welcome working Londoners – whatever their nationality and background – to achieve their ambitions.”

Galleries of students and their families at the graduation, plus videos, will be added throughout the week at our Spring 2018 graduation section.
