Five recruitment fairs in five countries: one extraordinary day for Birkbeck

A remarkable day of recruitment activities spanned five countries and three continents

Prospective international students gained an insight into what Birkbeck has to offer on a remarkable day of recruitment activities spanning five countries and three continents. Staff from Birkbeck’s International Office met students at higher education fairs in London, Moscow, Toronto, Seoul and Hanoi on Saturday 4 October.

The representation of Birkbeck at so many international events on one day is unprecedented and it signals the growing focus on international recruitment at Birkbeck. There are 800 international students at Birkbeck from countries outside the EU.

Reports from the recruitment fairs

Matt Dean, Head of Marketing and Recruitment (International) at Birkbeck, attended the busy UK Edu Fair in Seoul, South Korea. He reported significant interest in both undergraduate and postgraduate study, and particular interest in MSc Sport Management and the Business of Football, MSc Marketing, BA Global Politics and International Relations, and English-language courses. Birkbeck’s evening teaching was particularly attractive to many prospective students. Dean said: “Students are very keen to take the opportunity to look for an internship alongside studying for their Master’s.”

Steven Jefferies (pictured, right), International Marketing Officer at Birkbeck, attended the biggest event of the recruitment year for UK universities in Moscow. He noticed more interest for Birkbeck’s courses at the fair held near Red Square when compared with the same event last year.

Lauren Prone, International Marketing Officer at Birkbeck, attended the sold-out Recruit in Canada fair at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. David Tupper, Senior International Marketing Officer, met prospective students in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Closer to home, Sarah Whitaker attended the QS World Grad Fair Tour for prospective postgraduate students in Notting Hill in London. There was particular interest in business-related courses at the busy event attended by many universities, including the UK’s top institutions.

Jonah Duffin, Deputy Director of External Relations at Birkbeck, added: “We were delighted to be able to speak to prospective students in five countries on three continents on one day. These activities show our growing focus on international recruitment. International students really value studying at Birkbeck and we are delighted to welcome them to London.”
