Development and Alumni Team shortlisted for prestigious accolade

Birkbeck’s Development and Alumni team has been shortlisted in the Times Higher Education (THE) Leadership and Management Awards 2015.

Birkbeck’s Development and Alumni team has been shortlisted for an award in the Times Higher Education (THE) Leadership and Management Awards 2015.

The team, which is based at the College’s Egmont House building, has been shortlisted in the category of ‘Outstanding Development and Alumni Team’.

The category recognises innovation and success in encouraging alumni engagement with, and philanthropic giving to, an institution.

The team has successfully raised funds from alumni, friends, companies, trusts and foundations to provide vital support for students at all levels of study. Innovative programmes with alumni and companies have also led to funding and resource for entrepreneurship, employability and one-to-one advice and guidance for prospective and current students.

The application focused particularly on the successes of the Get Talking initiative - an innovative mentoring programme which supports the enrolment of students from under-represented and non-traditional backgrounds by utilising the experiences, enthusiasm and passion of Birkbeck alumni.

Evaluation questionnaires taken during the roll-out revealed that 94% of the prospective student respondents felt that following their meeting with a graduate they felt more confident about starting their course at Birkbeck.

Chris Murphy, Head of Development and Alumni, said: “I am thrilled that the hard work of the Development and Alumni team has been recognised in this way. We are delighted that the team is generating significant funds for the College and that our alumni and friends are playing a key role in supporting our students in creative new ways through projects such as Get Talking.

“Our generous donors and our ever-willing alumni and corporate networks make our roles a pleasure. We are incredibly grateful for all the support received from across the College. We look forward to further developing our inventive and ambitious initiatives over the coming years as we head towards Birkbeck’s bicentenary in 2023.”

Now in their seventh year, the annual THE Leadership and Management Awards aim to shine a light on the less visible teams working behind-the-scenes in higher education institutions, such as HR, Student Services and Procurement teams.

The winners of all 16 award categories will be announced in a black tie ceremony held at the Grosvenor Hotel, London, on Thursday June 18.
