Statement on Eric Salama (21 January 2019)

  • Master of Birkbeck, Professor David Latchman said: “We were extremely upset to learn that Eric Salama has been attacked and injured in an incident in Kew. Eric is a Birkbeck graduate. He has been a passionate supporter and governor of the College for a number of years and we would like to wish him a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with him and his family.”

Statement on hearing outcome in UCL case (15 November 2018)

  • The outcome of a UCL hearing has drawn a long running case involving publications at UCL to a close.
  • The hearing followed two investigations into publications connected to Professor Latchman’s research group at UCL, both of which found that Professor Latchman had no knowledge of, or involvement in, the image manipulation identified.  In addition, the hearing found that Professor Latchman’s management of his UCL research programme was not at fault.
  • Professor Latchman commented: “I am very pleased with this news. The hearing clearly recognised that issues such as those identified in the investigations may be difficult to detect even in well run teams.”

Birkbeck welcomes new CBI/UUK recommendations on part-time study (26 October 2018)

  • Professor David Latchman, Master of Birkbeck, said: “Birkbeck welcomes the CBI and UUK’s recommendations today. If implemented, these policy changes would support mature learners and those already in work to access the educational opportunities that have the potential to transform their careers and lives, and thus help to redress the 37% drop in part-time students that the UK saw between 2010-11 and 2016-17. At Birkbeck, we have a long tradition of supporting those who are combining study with work and other commitments, as well as enabling people who have spent a long time out of formal education to successfully navigate and complete university-level study. We are pleased that both the CBI-UUK project and the forthcoming Augar review of post-18 education and funding in England have given these issues the serious consideration that they warrant in a society committed to upskilling its workforce and enhancing social mobility. We hope to see these recommendations quickly translated into concrete policy that will benefit part-time students."
