Birkbeck’s strong international outlook recognised in QS World University Rankings 2018

Birkbeck’s strong research output and international focus have seen the College ranked 308 in the 2018 QS World University Rankings, which ranks over 900 universities worldwide.

The table takes into account factors such as a university’s academic and employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratios, citations per faculty member and international faculty and students.

Since 2014 the College has moved up 66 places in the rankings, this year performing among the top third of institutions ranked globally and among the top 40 UK institutions. The College’s employer reputation, which gathers the views of over 40 000 employers around the world on the institutions providing the best professionals, has improved this year, as has the student-to-faculty ratio. Birkbeck continues to rank strongly at attracting international students (16th among UK institutions) and staff (17th among UK institutions).

Professor David Latchman, Master of Birkbeck, said: “I am pleased to see that this year we continue to have a strong international ranking in the QS ranking. This speaks to Birkbeck’s positive profile abroad, as well as the intercultural teaching environment that is actively fostered here.

“The QS rankings, together with the 2014 REF results, which saw 73% of Birkbeck’s research rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ and the College’s top 250 position in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, confirms Birkbeck as one of the best places to study, not only in London but across the UK.”
