Birkbeck welcomes new report on lifelong learning

College says changes are necessary to enable reskilling and retraining

The University Alliance, which represents a number of universities around the UK with business and civic missions, yesterday published a new report: 'Lifelong Learning: Ladder and Lifeline'. University Alliance members have a significant number of part-time students in their institutions so this latest report is timely and many of the issues it covers are pertinent to Birkbeck's students as well.

Birkbeck's Policy Adviser, Jonathan Woodhead, welcomed the report saying:

"Birkbeck welcomes the Lifelong Learning: Ladder and Lifeline report published by the University Alliance yesterday. We support any measures to broaden the Apprenticeship Levy as it has too narrow a focus and welcome the recognition that the report gives to ELQ restrictions, which are a disincentive to those wanting to retrain. We wish to see many more subject areas taken out of the ELQ restrictions, to enable further reskilling and retraining. Birkbeck hopes the Government will use the opportunity of the Budget (8 March) to bring in some of these changes."
