Birkbeck welcomes international partner to celebrate new dual degree

A delegation from Birkbeck's partner university in China recently visited the School of Business, Economics and Informatics to celebrate a new degree programme partnership, which will benefit staff and students at both universities.

Birkbeck's School of Business Economics and Informatics (BEI) was delighted to welcome delegates from their prestigious partner institution, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) in China last month. The visit was to celebrate the new dual undergraduate degree programme between the two institutions, which started delivering to the first cohort of students in September this year.

SWUFE partnered with Birkbeck in 2011 through the School of BEI and in particular with the Department of Management. The partnership offers a range of benefits to students and staff at both universities, including a visiting staff programme and a number of collaborative degree programmes. The more recent of these is an undergraduate programme, which leads to the award of a dual degree: a Bachelor’s in International Business from SWUFE and a BA Management from Birkbeck.

Professor Philip Powell, Executive Dean of the School of Business, Economics and Informatics, praised the strong, collaborative foundation of the programme: "Birkbeck’s School of Business, Economics and Informatics is committed to providing its business students with the critical and creative thinking skills required to become future business leaders. We are delighted to partner with SWUFE to provide this dual programme, which fosters mutual understanding and respect between Western and Chinese cultures."

SWUFE is the training base for political and economic talent in Southwest China and is one of the leading institutions for economics and finance education in the country. The institution's School of International Business (SIB) has a special focus on talent development and international exchange.

Lauren Prone, Head of the International team at Birkbeck, commented on the success of the long-standing partnership with SWUFE: "Birkbeck is proud to have a growing number of strategic partnerships with leading global universities, which promote the free exchange of ideas, and provide a great opportunity for students and staff to experience higher education in another culture.

"The students on this programme will spend the first three years of their studies at SWUFE, with Birkbeck staff going out to teach modules in their second and third years. We look forward to welcoming them to Birkbeck in October 2020, for their fourth and final year of study."
