Birkbeck student shortlisted for Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Award

PhD Psychology student Suzi Godson has been shortlisted for the 2016 Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Award

Birkbeck PhD Psychology student Suzi Godson has been shortlisted for the 2016 Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Award for her company Mee Two, which offers digital support for teenagers coping with anxiety.

Suzi is one of five finalists in the new technologies and mobile applications section of the competition. Those shortlisted will present their business plan to a panel of academic leaders, successful entrepreneurs and previous winners for a chance to win financial support and mentoring from Santander UK teams. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 30 June.

In order to submit her business idea to the awards Suzi first had to go through an internal process at Birkbeck. Professor Philip Powell, Pro Vice-Master for Enterprise and Innovation and Executive Dean of the School of Business, Economics and Informatics, who judged the Birkbeck submissions, said: “We selected Mee Two to be the entry from Birkbeck as we were impressed with the detail and thoroughness of Suzi’s business plan. Suzi has a clear vision as to how her product can meet a pressing need in our society and her knowledge, together with the skills of the team that she has gathered around her, mean that she is well equipped to turn this excellent idea into a thriving business.”

Suzi said: “I am delighted that Mee Two has been selected as a shortlist for the award. We are now at the stage where we are hoping to launch the product within the next year and having the package of financial support plus business advice offered by Santander would be incredibly beneficial at this crucial time for the business.”

Birkbeck offers a wide range of face-to-face and online support for students who are interested in enterprise and entrepreneurship. The Enterprise Pathways programme has been developed specifically to help students develop their entrepreneurial skills, while the College’s in-house recruitment service, Birkbeck Talent, can help place students in internships with start-ups and SMEs where they gain insights into the realities of launching a business.
