The European Union flag

Today sees the triggering of Article 50, the start of the UK’s negotiation to leave the European Union. While there will be no immediate effect, Birkbeck, University of London, assures all of our staff, students and research partners that we remain an open, accessible and inclusive institution.

The British Government has already assured those who commence study this year (2017-18) that, for the length of their studies, they will be eligible for home fee status, loans and grants. We also expect to hear shortly about support for those applying for entry in 2018-19.

The UK will remain in the EU for the next two years as the Government negotiates with EU member states. Throughout this process, Birkbeck is mindful of the uncertainty EU national staff members may feel and will seek to provide practical help and support and to safeguard the existing rights of these colleagues who make a vital contribution to our university and indeed, the UK as a whole. Further information for staff will be available shortly after Easter.

We would also like to reassure research partners of our continued commitment to productive collaborations across the continent and further afield. The government has already guaranteed to underwrite payments of awards won while the UK is still a member of the EU, for their duration.
