Birkbeck response to UCAS applicant figures
30 January 2012
Birkbeck's three-year undergraduate degrees, which are taught in the evenings, and enable students to combine university study with full-time work or other daytime commitments have seen an increase in applications of 153% since last year. These figures show that applications to the College are bucking the trend seen in UCAS applicant figures for the 15 January deadline, which were released today, and showed a decrease in the number of applicants applying to study full-time undergraduate courses starting in 2012, especially among mature learners.
Professor David Latchman CBE, Master of Birkbeck, commented: “With the economic uncertainty of the last few years set to continue, and the increase in tuition fees in 2012, it seems that many students are looking for flexible degree programmes, which will enable them to work while they study, offsetting some of the costs of university and gaining valuable work experience for when they graduate.”
Birkbeck also offers a wide range of four-year, part-time undergraduate programmes, also taught in the evenings. Students can apply for part-time courses directly to the College, and applications are now open.
