Birkbeck ranked in top 150 universities in the world

Birkbeck has achieved a ranking of 149 in the World University Rankings, published by the Times Higher Education magazine today.

Birkbeck has moved up the tables by three places from last year’s rankings, and received particularly strong scores in the citations category, which considers the degree of influence of the research taking place at the College, and the international outlook category, which takes into account the mix of nationalities of staff and students, and the focus and reach of research activities. The rankings also place the College 59 in Europe and 24 in the UK, above several Russell Group universities, including Liverpool, Cardiff and Warwick.

Professor David Latchman CBE, Master of Birkbeck, said: “We are delighted to see Birkbeck ranking within the top 150 institutions in the world. This position reflects the outstanding standards in the core elements of Birkbeck’s offering: world-class research and the highest quality face-to-face teaching.  My congratulations go to colleagues across the College, whose dedication and enthusiasm for their research and their students has resulted in this excellent ranking.”

Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, said: "Birkbeck, University of London has been ranked in 149th place in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011-12.

"Our table of the top 200 represents approximately the top one per cent of higher education institutions worldwide, so securing a place within it is an outstanding achievement.

"To do so, a university must score highly across our full range of indicators, and indeed Birkbeck, University of London performed consistently well throughout, but it scored particularly impressively for its Citations Impact and International Outlook, enabling it to consolidate an already impressive 2010-11 position.

"In an increasingly competitive international field, and with the 2011-12 rankings including some significant new entries, I would like to offer my personal congratulations to Birkbeck, University of London on an exceptional result."
