The 2021 QS World University Rankings, regarded as one of the world’s most consulted sources of comparative data for university performance, has ranked Birkbeck in the top 40 UK universities from those evaluated.

The College’s strong international brand and global outlook has also been demonstrated with the College placing no. 22, in its UK ranking, for the ability to attract international students; and in the top 6% of those ranked worldwide. Additionally, Birkbeck’s research was ranked as ‘very high’.

Professor Matt Innes, Vice-Master remarked, “I’m delighted that these rankings show that Birkbeck's international standing goes from strength to strength. As the growth of our diverse and inspiring student community shows, Birkbeck's international recognition as an institution of choice for students from across the globe wishing to study in the heart of London continues to gain momentum. Our international recruitment figures show that applications are up 16% on last year, with continuous, steady growth over the last three years.”

Publishing firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) evaluates universities according to six metrics: 1) Academic reputation, 2) Employer reputation, 3)Faculty/Student ratio, 4) Citations per faculty, 5) International faculty ratio and 6) International student ratio.

In total, 1002 universities were ranked from 80 different locations, following an initial submission from over 5500 universities who were evaluated and considered for inclusion. 90 UK universities were included within the final rankings.

Birkbeck ranked position 344 globally, #107 for international students and #114 for citations. Institutional research quality is often measured using the QS rankings ‘citations per faculty’ metric.
