Birkbeck part of consortium awarded funding for doctoral training
Partnership will provide 41 studentships per year for six years
Birkbeck is part of one of 14 Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP) to be awarded funding by the Economic and Social Research Council for 2017-23, to provide support for postgraduate training. The DTP is made up of Birkbeck, SOAS, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UCL and the University of East London. It will provide 41 PhD studentships per year.
Birkbeck is leading the archaeology and heritage, economic and social history (jointly with UCL), economics (jointly with UCL) gender and sexuality, law and criminology, linguistics (jointly with UCL), politics and international relations, psychology and sociology disciplinary pathways offered by the DTP. The other pathways with which Birkbeck is involved are health and well-being, and human geography.
Professor Julian Swann, Pro-Vice Master for Research at Birkbeck, said: “We are delighted that the ESRC has made this award. It will enable us to build on our existing doctoral training and expand our work with our partners, delivering the highest-quality postgraduate training.”
DTPs training focuses on providing skills such as:
- working in interdisciplinary teams
- communicating research ideas and findings clearly
- working alongside international partners
- being equipped to undertake high-quality analytical work
- handling different forms of data
- collaborating with others
The ESRC is the UK's largest organisation for funding research on economic and social issues. It supports independent, high-quality research which has an impact on business, the public sector and the third sector.
