Birkbeck graduate shortlisted for Association of Business Psychology award

Sarah Mason’s MSc project is nominated in ‘Excellence in Employee Engagement’ category

A Birkbeck graduate’s Master’s research project has been shortlisted for an Association of Business Psychology (ABP) Workforce Experience Award.

Sarah Mason, who graduated in April with distinction with an MSc in Management Consultancy and Organisational Change, has been shortlisted in the ‘Excellence in Employee Engagement’ category of the annual ABP awards scheme.

Sarah has been recognised for research she carried out during her MSc project with a company focusing on how they collaborate and share knowledge using online platforms. The project compared the company’s two main collaborative technology platforms, their intranet and their discussion-based platform, in order to understand how to optimise use. The focus was on exploring the relationship between individual motivation and knowledge sharing.

Using quantitative research methods including surveys and statistical analysis Sarah highlighted a significant difference between the two platforms, suggesting the company’s typical employee was more likely to share knowledge using a discussion-based platform.

Now in their third year, the ABP Workforce Experience Awards are instrumental in supporting the Association’s ambition to champion business psychology to achieve effective and sustainable performance for organisations and people at work. The winners of the 2016 awards will be announced at a ceremony in October in Kew, West London.

Sarah said she was delighted to have been shortlisted for the award.

She said: “The ABP awards are widely recognised and there are some very impressive finalists, so it’s fantastic to be included on the shortlist and to get recognition for my MSc research.”

During her two-year part-time degree Birkbeck, the 42-year-old Twickenham resident established Talent Advantage, her own human resources and leadership training consultancy which built on her experience in senior roles at global recruitment firms. Since her consultancy’s launch in March 2014, it has become well established in the recruitment industry. Read more of Sarah’s story at Birkbeck’s blog.
