Hear what they say in their own words about combining work and study, improved career prospects, financial support, friendship, and the joy of learning.

Birkbeck is London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education. We attract many non-traditional students and offer them the unique opportunity to fit university studies around their busy lives.

Olympics report

This is the third year of Universities Week – a campaign to increase public awareness of the wide and varied role of the UK’s universities. As part of the week, a report has been launched today to show the links between higher education and the Olympics, including details about Birkbeck’s tour guiding course in East London.

Inspired by this summer’s Olympic Games, the module focuses on the heritage of East London and provides hands-on experience in guiding. Students learn how the city has been shaped by migration, examine the area’s radical past, and visit West India Dock, Spitalfields, Hackney, Greenwich and Stratford.

Information about the 10-week course is included in the report Olympic and Paralympic Games: The impact of universities. This year Universities Week (30 April -7 May) is focusing on the contribution made by the UK’s universities to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the sports industry and society in general.

The tour guiding module, which covers the activities of the anarchists, suffragettes, and socialists, is currently being taught for a second session due to popular demand. It is part of a Certificate of Higher Education offered by Birkbeck’s Department of History, Classics and Archaeology.

Lecturer Mike Berlin teaches the course with two experienced London guides. He said: “It’s a great opportunity to explore an area of London that will have the world’s attention this summer. The course has attracted a wide range of students, from East End residents keen to learn more about their local history, to people from further afield thinking about going on into higher education.”
