Birkbeck, University of London has been accredited as a London Living Wage employer by the Living Wage Foundation.

The accreditation recognises the commitment of the college to paying staff - whether they are permanent employees or third-party contractors and suppliers - the London living wage, which is presently £9.15 an hour.

The rate is currently calculated to take into account the basic cost of living in the city and based on a social consensus about what people need to make things meet.

In London, the rate is set annually by the Living Wage Foundation based on a calculation by the Greater London Authority (GLA).

Commenting on Birkbeck becoming accredited, Living Wage Foundation Director Rhys Moore said:

“We are delighted to welcome Birkbeck College to the Living Wage movement as an accredited employer. The Living Wage is a robust calculation that reflects the real cost of living, rewarding a hard day’s work with a fair day’s pay.”
