Philosophy rated world-leading

Birkbeck’s department of Philosophy has been rated 6th in the UK, according to a new survey. The Philosophical Gourmet Report (also known as The Leiter Report) is the most respected ranking of philosophy departments in the world. It is based on a survey of nearly 300 leading philosophers, and Birkbeck ranked strongly in a number of specialist areas:

• 2nd in the world in feminist philosophy
• Top 10 in the world in both philosophy of action and the history of analytic philosophy
• Top 20 in the world for philosophy of language

This report follows the results of the recent Research Assessment Exercise, which analysed the research of all Faculty members. 100% of it was judged to be of a quality that is internationally recognised. In addition, the department’s teaching achieved the highest rating when it was last assessed by the QAA.
