Birkbeck philosopher explores Spinoza on BBC Radio 3

Professor Susan James from the Department of Philosophy will explore the work of 17th century Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza on BBC Radio 3’s The Essay.

She will contribute two essays in a series of five that will run nightly this week. Spinoza was raised in Amsterdam as a Sephardic Jew and was immersed in what may now be termed a multi-faith community. His work explored the role of democracy and the relationship between religion, politics and philosophy. He is widely credited with starting a new line of political thinking which stretches to today.

Professor James will draw on content from her forthcoming book Spinoza on Politics and Religion.  The 'Tractats Theologico Politicus'. Her episodes will be broadcast on Tues 12 and Thurs 14 January at 11pm.
