A.G. (Bertie) Hines (1935-2018)
The Department was sad to hear of the death of A.G. (Bertie) Hines (1935-2018). Bertie and Richard Portes were hired in 1971 by the Master of Birkbeck, Ronnie Tress, to set up the Department of Economics. Bertie was one of the few black professors of economics at the time. Ron Smith attended his funeral. Bertie’s ashes will be returned to his house in Jamaica.
