Consent to terms and conditions

By enrolling on a course at Birkbeck, you are giving your consent to the processing of your data by Birkbeck. Enrolment and registration are subject to the current regulations.

Should you not wish to consent to these conditions, you must contact Birkbeck within 14 days of receipt of this confirmation of enrolment, at which point we will cancel your enrolment and refund any fees paid.

Processing of your personal data

Information provided by and concerning applicants and students is held by the College in its original, electronic and other formats and is processed for the purposes of administration and management of applications, admissions, student records, student progress and support, and for marketing and statistical purposes in accordance with relevant legislation, including the Data Protection Act 1998. It is a condition to the College’s consideration of applications for admissions and enrolment that such data will be held and processed.

Student data collection notice

We will send some of the information we hold about you to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). This forms your HESA record, which contains mainly coded information including ethnicity and disability data. Your record, or parts of it, will be passed to those of the following bodies that require it to carry out their statutory functions in relation to the funding of education:

The data in your record will be used, primarily for statistical analysis, by HESA and the above bodies. This use may result in the publication and release of data to other approved users, which may include academic researchers and commercial bodies. Your record will not be used by HESA or any of the above bodies in a way that would affect you individually.

You may wish to note that your contact details will not be made available to HESA and that precautions are taken to minimise the risk of identification of individuals from the published and released data. None of the above bodies will be able to use the data provided to HESA in order to contact you.

When you qualify, further data about you will be collected, and information on how this will be used will be provided at that time.

Under the Data Protection Act 1998 you have the right to a copy of the data held about you by HESA, for a small fee. If you have any concerns about, or objections to, the use of data for these purposes, please contact HESA or write to them at 95 Promenade, Cheltenham, GL50 1HZ.
