Essay writing workshops
Essay writing 1: planning
The most time-consuming part of essay writing is the planning stage: analysing the essay title, gathering your information (your notes), thinking about the main points you want to make, what to include, what to leave out, how to order your thoughts, gathering your bibliographical references. In other words, the essay should be in your head before you start writing.
In this session we will look at:
- understanding the essay title: what the final product (the essay) should look like
- the essential ‘ingredients’
- being clear about what you want to say
- deciding on the order of your main points

Essay writing 2: writing up
Having decided on the content and shape of your essay, the task is now to write up each point clearly in a logical linear sequence of paragraphs.
We will take a close look at:
- conventions of academic writing: the language register, being precise and avoiding vague general statements, the need for backing up an argument
- linguistic features of English (paragraphs, topic sentences, discourse markers and ‘hedging’)
- the need for correct referencing, the concept of plagiarism and how to avoid it.
