Mobility difficulties
Birkbeck’s main buildings have a high level of accessibility.
We have a range of specialist equipment, including orthopaedic chairs and adjustable height tables. We have accessible toilets in all of our main buildings, which are equipped with Radar Locks and Radar keys that are available from all reception desks, school/department offices and the Disability Office.
What can the Disability Office do for you?
The Disability Office can:
- assist you in applying to Birkbeck, including arranging a pre-application visit
- assist you with enrolment and registration at Birkbeck and with making the most of the induction process

assist you in applying to your Student Finance England for the Disabled Students' Allowance. The Disabled Students' Allowance may pay for:
- personal computers with speech-to-text software
- specialist keyboards and mice
- orthopaedic chairs, footrests etc so you can study at home
- personal assistance to assist in accessing the College, assist them in the Library and note take for them in lectures
- allowances for books, photocopying, printing and internet costs
- assistance with additional travel costs, for example with the cost of taxi fares
- arrange a pre-application visit, if appropriate
- liaise with the London Borough of Camden to obtain a Green Badge for accessible parking
- assist you in recruiting personal assistants
- liaise with Disability IT Support to arrange a demonstration of specialist equipment (e.g. voice-activated software, specialist keyboards and mice)
- liaise with the Estates Department regarding any access difficulties you may experience
- liaise with the Room Bookings Office to ensure accessible lecture theatres are used
- provide information, advice and training to your lecturers on supporting students with mobility difficulties
- liaise with lecturers to request copies of overhead projector transparencies (OHPs), Powerpoint presentations, handouts and lecture notes, where necessary
- liaise with Library Access Support regarding wheelchair access, collection of books and the LAMP Service (Library Materials by Post)
- advise you on what special examination arrangements (link) you may need and assist you in arranging these
- aim to involve you and all students and the Students’ Union in the development of policy and support services for students with disabilities.
