Policy on student confidentiality

Once you declare a disability, it is our responsibility to ensure that all staff are informed of your needs and to ensure that they make the necessary reasonable adjustments. Any information you give us regarding your disability is confidential and held only within our Registry department.

Sharing your information

We will share information on your disability under certain circumstances:

  • Where you need support, we may need to provide some details of your disability to help our staff understand and support your needs. This would only be with your agreement and after you complete a confidentiality consent form.
  • All academic institutions are required to supply information on numbers of students with disabilities to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). This information however is provided in an anonymous form, so no individual student can be identified.
  • Find out more about how Birkbeck processes your personal data.

You may request limited disclosure of your information but, if you do so, you limit your rights under the Disability Discrimination Act.

If you are concerned that the disclosure of your details may affect your situation, you can call us and tell us you would prefer not to give your name, so that we can advise you anonymously.
