What evidence do you need to provide?
- Autism, Asperger's syndrome and related medical conditions
- Blindness or visual impairment
- Deafness or hearing impairment
- Dyslexia
- Mental health issues
- Mobility difficulties / medical conditions
Before we can put support in place, we will need evidence of your disability or specific learning difficulty. Please send or bring the evidence to the Disability Office before you start your course, so that we can check that it meets our criteria.
Autism, Asperger's syndrome and related medical conditions
You will need to provide a medical report from a general practitioner or consultant psychiatrist.
Blindness or visual impairment
You will need to provide either a copy of the Registration of Partial Sight or Blindness or a letter from a general practitioner or consultant ophthalmologist.
Deafness or hearing impairment
We will need a medical report from either a general practitioner or consultant audiologist outlining the level and degree of your hearing loss.
Dyslexia
You will need an assessment report from a psychologist or specialist teacher who holds a current Practising Certificate in SpLD Assessment issued by their professional association (e.g. BPS or Patoss). The report must indicate the degree to which dyslexia might affect your performance in higher education and make specific recommendations for support.
If you were assessed as dyslexic as a child (less than 18 years of age), you may need to have a re-assessment in order to get support.
If you do not have a recent report, you should contact the Disability Office, so they can refer you to an educational psychologist for assessment.
Mental health issues
You will need to provide a medical letter from a general practitioner or consultant psychiatrist.
Mobility difficulties / medical conditions
In this category, we include: multiple sclerosis, ME, back problems, head injuries, dexterity problems (e.g. RSI) and mobility problems (e.g. wheelchair users).
The requirement for evidence will vary according to the specific circumstances, but may include a medical report from either a general practitioner, consultant orthopedic surgeon or other specialist medical practitioner. In cases of chronic disability, this should be not more than two years old.
