Main Birkbeck buildings
These are the main buildings at Birkbeck, and they comprise two distinct areas: the main building and the extension building.
- Access: you get to these buildings via the Torrington Square entrance, which has level-entry access and a double set of automatic sliding doors. The Torrington Square entrance opens into the main foyer containing the main reception desk and access to the library and the My Birkbeck helpdesk.
- Lift access: the Main Building is served by two new lifts located in the Main Reception area; these are wheelchair accessible with auditory announcements, braille and tactile buttons. The extension building is served by two lifts, which are wheelchair-accessible and also have auditory announcements, braille and tactile buttons. Both of these sets of lifts can be used for the emergency evacuation of disabled persons should such action ever be necessary.
- Seating areas: for the benefit of students who have difficulty with walking or experience fatigue we have provided seating in reception areas, also along some of the longer corridors we have rest seating.
- Accessible toilets: there are accessible toilets on all floors and shower facilities on the ground floor of the Main Building.
- Student lockers: Lockers are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. There is normally a waiting list for lockers, but priority may be given to disabled students. You should apply to the Attendant Supervisor at the main reception desk.
- Wheelchair access: most lecture theatres, classrooms, computer laboratories and floors of the library are accessible to wheelchair users.
-
Induction loops: Birkbeck has a range of induction loops for students with hearing impairments.
- There are fixed induction loops in the following lecture theatres in the Malet Street building: B33, B34, B35, B36 and fixed infra-red hearing systems in a further 16 other teaching rooms.
- A plan for seats with the best reception is available from the Disability Office.
- We also have portable induction loops, which can be used in the smaller classrooms.
