Application deadlines and interviews
We advise you to submit your application form as early as possible. Where there are application deadlines, you will find these listed on the individual course entries (generally under the heading 'When to apply').
Please contact the My Birkbeck Student Centre if you would like more information.
Closing dates
We try to give equal consideration to all applications received before the end of May, but if your form is incomplete or if you cannot submit the required written work or entrance test before the interview shortlist is complete, then your application may not be considered.
Please check the online course listing to find out:
-
whether a fixed closing date applies
- when interviews are to be held - some admissions tutors start shortlisting interviewees for oversubscribed programmes in January; other admissions tutors begin the assessment process in February or March
- when the course is expected to be full.
Please note: if you intend to apply for any form of academic funding (this applies only if you are planning to study one of our postgraduate or MPhil/PhD degrees), you will need to apply by early March at the latest.
Interviews
If no firm closing date is quoted on the course listing, but a date for interviews is given (check the course listing for information on closing/interview dates), try to submit your application at least two weeks before the first group of interviews. This will allow time for the admissions tutor to assess your application and send you details of any entrance test arrangements.
The selection of candidates for interview is based on:
-
the degree or professional qualifications stated on your application form
- relevant work experience, skills and interests
- referees’ reports (referees will be asked to comment on your capacity and readiness for postgraduate study)
- a piece of written work (where required).
The date of interviews varies. To find out when your interviews are likely to be held, use the contact details listed on the online listings.
Late vacancies
Some courses have late vacancies and hold a second round of interviews in August/September. The course listing will tell you if this is likely. You should check late availability with the relevant academic department and try to get your application form to us before the end of July.
Get Ahead summer programme
Once you have applied for a course (even while you are waiting to hear about your application) you are eligible to attend free workshops designed to help you prepare and get ready for your degree study.
