This year for the first time the Entrepreneurs' Challenge is open to all Birkbeck staff and students, whatever their background or discipline. It will run from October to December 2010.
The Entrepreneurs' Challenge is a series of workshops designed to introduce participants to fundamental business concepts that will be useful in all business and academic careers. Topics will include how to spot a good idea, intellectual property and finding funding.
The workshops will be supported by a business plan competition, which will give those taking part a chance to put into practice what they learn. The competition will be in two parts. In the first, the aim will be to produce a summary of a business idea and in the second, a business plan will be developed. All entrants will be offered coaching and mentor support in putting their ideas together.
You do not have to have a business idea of your own in order to join. Most of the entries will be team-based and there will be a chance to form teams once the competition is under way. Ideas may be technology-based, particularly if you are working on a relevant academic project, or less technology orientated such as retail outlets or services - they will all be welcome!
The scheme is led by UCL Advances, UCL's Centre for Entrepreneurship and Business Interaction, with support from venture capital groups, legal firms and technology companies - representatives of all of these will take part in the workshops and in judging the competition.
Workshops will take place every Tuesday of the first term. The first workshop will be held at 6.15pm, Tuesday 12th October, in the Roberts G06 Sir Ambrose Fleming Lecture Theatre on the UCL main campus, opposite Waterstone's, just off Gower Street. The Entrepreneurs' Challenge organising team will introduce the programme and explain more of what is involved. There will also be a presentation on "What makes a good business idea?" followed by food and drink.
Full details of the workshops and location can be found on the E-Challenge website.
