Tuesday 16 November
Talk by Mike Berlin 12 noon to 1pm: 43 Gordon Square: Room G04
London has always been a city of migrants. This talk by Mike Berlin will explore the enormous contribution that migrants have made to the development of London as a modern global city and to the ways in which the history of migration to London might inform debates on diversity in the metropolis today.
Wednesday 17 November
Film screening of Derek, 2008 by Isaac Julien 12 noon to 2pm: Room 532, Malet Street
Derek is a film of Jarman’s life and work illuminating his experience of life from the hedonism of the 1960s through the Thatcherite years to the early 1990s. The film is introduced by Brian Robinson; British Film Institute and will be followed by a panel discussion on how ‘film addresses themes around sexuality and gender’, chaired by Dr Jayasaree Khalatil, with Dr Amna Malik, UCL and Dr Matt Cook, Birkbeck
Wednesday 17 November
Beginning Scanning with Claroread by Barbara Denton, ICT 2pm to 3.30pm: Room 413 Malet Street
This workshop is for disabled students who are interested in learning how to use claroread. Book through the IT Helpdesk in Malet Street or visit ITS web page
Thursday 17 November
Film screening of Mnemosyne, 2010 by John Akomfrah. 12 noon to 2pm: Dr William's Library, 14 Gordon Square
John Akomfrah will be joining a panel discussion introduced by Nima Poovaya-Smith from cultural programmers Alchemy Anew to discuss his long contribution to British cinema from his involvement in the Black Audio Film Collective up to the present. They will be joined by Dr Helen de Witt from Birkbeck, University of London's Department of Media and Cultural Studies.

Friday 19 November
A personal perspective from an academic refugee, 12 noon to 1pm: Room B02, Malet Street
The Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA) provides support to academics seeking refuge in the UK. Jasmine Gideon, Course Convenor for Migration Studies at Birkbeck will provide an overview of CARA and introduce Ion Muyzere, an academic forced to flee by the Rwandan Government, who will provide a personal perspective.
Friday 19 November
Three Short Films about Diversity, 6 pm to 7pm: Birkbeck Cinema, Gordon Square
Birkbeck has commissioned three short films to be used as part of the on-line training course for staff, Equality, Diversity and You. The videos focus on three key equality issues; race, transgender and health and disability.
After the videos, John Wark, the director and Selena Rubery from World Armada Productions will talk about their background and experience of this project.
Tuesday 23 November
Creative Movement Workshop, 12 noon to 2pm: Studio 1, Drill Hall, 16 Chenies Street, London WC1E
Maria Koripas, Director, Dance Programme, Birkbeck leads this workshop, starting with a yoga based warm-up leading to rhythmic exercises to articulate the spine, joints and stretch the muscles, followed by ‘travelling in space using a range of improvisatory tasks on self, with a partner and whole group.

Home cooking: What’s your favourite dish?
As part of Diversity Week we are asking staff and students to send in favourite recipes for dishes from their own past or present life.
We plan to publish a cookbook to raise money for charities supporting refugees and asylum seekers. Email your recipe to diversity@bbk.ac.uk and you will be entered into a prize draw.
