Stay Motivated Seminar

This seminar has now finished, we will be running it again at a future date.

Is your course more challenging than you anticipated? Many students find studying a degree a challenge, you are not alone.

But there is a lot you can do to help you succeed on your course. The free Stay Motivated Seminar will help you reflect on your experience as a student so far. Understanding your responses to the demands of your course will help you become a more confident and effective learner.

We will also work on strategies to help you improve the way you approach studying, deal with assignment feedback and identify the necessary steps to making sure you succeed.

Seminar programme

10 - 11.30am Motivation and confidence - How do I stay motivated?

At this point in the year you may feel tired and de-motivated. This session with Dr Aaron Balick will help you reflect on your current learning experience. You will be encouraged to consider the internal and external stimuli that affect your confidence and motivation. You will be invited to consider your views about your ability and what helps you to boost your confidence.

11.30am - 1.00pm  Mind set - How can I change my way of thinking about challenges and obstacles?

People with a fixed mind set tend to set ‘performance goals’ and believe that getting an ‘A’ grade demonstrates their intelligence. A fixed mind set is more likely to make you feel helpless in the face of perceived ‘failure’ and you are more likely to be de-motivated as you think that you are not intelligent enough.

People with a growth mind set tend to set ‘learning goals’ and believe that a setback is a good reason to change strategies and effort and then try again. Achievement is about attitude not aptitude.

We will look at your mind set and how you can work at changing it in order to be a more effective learner.

1.30 - 3.00pm  Goal setting - how can I go forward when I don’t know which way I am facing?

In this session with career consultant Terry Jones you will have an opportunity to identify and focus not only on your short term but also long term (career) goals. The session will enable you to look back at your reasons for wanting to study for a degree and to look forward to long achieving term goals. You will leave the session with an action plan.
