Registering with the police

International students of certain nationalities may be required to register with the police within 7 days of arrival in the UK.

This requirement will be written in your visa if it applies to you. It is also necessary to inform the police within 7 days of changing your UK address or if you have an extension to your visa.

How and where to register

Students living in Greater London should go to:

The Overseas Visitor Records Office
Ground Floor, Brandon House
180 Borough High Street
Borough
London
SE1 1LH

Tel: 020 7230 1208

Open: Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm (but try to go early, as there are often very long queues).

The nearest tube stations are Borough or London Bridge on the Northern Line.  To register, you must take with you:

  • Your passport
  • Student visa
  • Registration fee - currently £34.

(Note: there is no fee when you report changes of address or have an extension to your visa.)

After registration

The police will give you your ‘Police Registration Certificate’. Keep this safe and carry it with you when you travel and need to re-enter the UK or apply to renew your visa.
