Students are sometimes confused about the appropriate tenses to use in academic writing.

In this workshop, we review some common confusions and unfortunate over-complications in the use of tenses in academic expression.

We attend briefly to the use of tenses in referencing. Which tenses should you use when you cite the work of others? Why?

We glance at modal auxiliary forms ('caution' structures: may, might, could, should, would, and so on) and their use in academic writing.
