Arts Essay Writing Holiday Workshop 1: What IS an Academic Essay? How the Question Gets You Going

In workshop 1 of this condensed version of the Essay Writing Programme, we begin by considering the basic attributes of Academic Writing in the Arts and Humanities. We look at such issues as developing an argument; achieving your informed voice; structure; coherence; register; rigour. And we think about what gets in the way of our ability to write in this manner.

We then move on to ask why answering the question is so important in Academic Essay Writing. How can this stage in itself launch a flexible, but organised approach to writing as a process? We learn new techniques for unpacking the essay question: D-language, C-language, F-language, R-language.
