Birkbeck College Awards

These awards are available to help part-time postgraduate students enrolled in their second or third year of study, who have experienced a serious unforeseen change in circumstances whilst on the course.  This could be a change in financial circumstances such as redundancy, or a change in personal circumstances such as illness.

First year part-time postgraduate students, first and second year part-time MPhil/PhD students and all full-time postgraduate students are not eligible for this funding.

Applicants will have to demonstrate that they had made realistic provision to cover all course costs and that their change in circumstances means that they may struggle to remain on the course or meet fee payments.  These are discretionary awards and if successful, you may receive:

  • Full or partial awards to help with the cost of tuition fees.  Fee awards are usually based on the standard rates of fee (some courses charge a fee above the standard rate).
  • Small awards to assist with general course costs: for example, essential books or the cost of travel to and from Birkbeck.

If applying for childcare, these awards are for single parents on a low income.

Applicants should not usually be earning more than the standard income thresholds and the percentage of any award will be scaled based on income from the previous tax year. Please see the table below for the standard income bandings:

Band Income

1 Below £16,845 100
2 £16,845 - £20,585 75
3 £20,586 - £24,325 50
4 £24,326 - £28,065 25
