Processing your federal loan application
We cannot begin to process your application until we have received all the relevant information and documentation.
The Head of Academic Services approves loans by certifying the following:
- the applicant is registered to enrol or is enrolled to study at Birkbeck
- the loan amount is justified on the basis of the estimated cost of attendance (CoA), consisting of the amount of fees payable by the applicant for the academic year in question plus estimated cost of living, books and equipment (currently £13,200).
The federal loan amount we normally approve is calculated by subtracting the estimated family contribution (EFC from the Student Aid Report) from the annual cost of attendance:
CoA - EFC - any other aid = max loan amount (within the borrowing limits for such loans)
If we are unable to approve the loan amount requested based on the information in the application documents, we will contact you for clarification and further documentation.
Once processed, stamped and signed, your application documents are sent to your lender by courier.
Once we have sent the documents to your lender, you need to check with them about the status of your loan.
