The final event of the Material Cultures of Energy research project will explore energy supply in the past and discuss what radical transformations are likely in the future.
The event will include interactive sessions that will introduce participants to the dynamics of energy transitions in the past, to new ways of thinking about the role people and communities played in such transformations and to discuss implications for future plans and policies. We will focus on the British case but with comparative examples.
It will showcase key findings from the Material Cultures of Energy including how:
• Networks and grids changed communities and our sense of space
• How changes will affect our homes
• How societies have managed and will manage times of shortages and disruption
• Energy futures were imagined and contested
• How this will affect us here in Britain
Material Cultures of Energy is a research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) in its ‘Care for the Future: Thinking Forward through the Past’ initiative. The project is based at Birkbeck College, University of London.

Tea and coffee will be served from 5.30pm. The event starts at 6.00pm (prompt). At 8.00pm there will be a networking drinks reception in the exhibition area where there will be a display of posterboards from the project, a chance to view rare film and surprising objects and provide an opportunity to meet other experts and stakeholders working on energy demand, decarbonisation, community energy schemes, heating and related policies.
