Berlin, Germany

Frank Trentmann is giving a Carl-von-Carlowitz lecture at the Annual Conference of the Council for Sustainable Development (Rat für Nachhaltige Entwicklung), Berlin Congress Centre, 2 June 2015:

Title: “Material culture and consumers: insights and challenges for sustainable development”

Summary: Daily routines, social practices and lifestyles shape the way a society consumes and the pressure it places on finite and renewable resources. In order to find answers to questions of sustainability today, Prof. Dr. Frank Trentmann offers a historical perspective on the material culture of consumers: what is the relationship between goods and their users? What roles have consumers played in great transformations in the past? What is the influence of the state, the market and social movements? And what can this teach us for the politics of the 21st century?
