Paz Estrella Tolentino was appointed Lecturer in International Business at Birkbeck in January 1995 after having worked previously at the United Nations Centre on Transnational Corporations in New York and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva since 1988.

Contributions at Birkbeck

Established only in 1992, the Department of Management at Birkbeck was just over two years old when Paz Estrella Tolentino joined it in January 1995. At the time of its formation, the Department of Management was a provider of teaching in Management modules to undergraduate students based in other departments at Birkbeck, as well as to students of the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies and University College London’s School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies. When Paz Estrella Tolentino joined Birkbeck in 1995, the Department of Management had just established its own undergraduate honours degree programmes (BA Management and BA Accounting and Management), and had yet to explore the opportunities of establishing postgraduate programmes that would provide the Department with both financial rewards and academic prestige. Paz Estrella Tolentino played an instrumental role in establishing and launching in 1995/96 the MSc International Business programme as the first postgraduate programme at Birkbeck’s Department of Management. Until the introduction of other postgraduate degree programmes in the Department of Management, the MSc International Business programme was the most important source of fee income in the Department and a significant source of fee income in the College.

She assumed sole responsibility for the accreditation at the earliest possible opportunity of the MSc International Business programme with the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as an advanced postgraduate course with specialist status in 1998. She made a significant contribution to the ESRC recognition of the MSc International Business and MSc International Business by Research programmes as Research Training Masters’ degrees in 2001.

When Birkbeck began to offer Foundation Degree programmes in 2001/02, Paz Estrella Tolentino contributed to develop these programmes at the College and those in the subject areas of Management and Management with Accounting in particular. As Programme Director from 2001/02 to 2009/10, she enhanced the work-based learning content as a distinctive feature of the component modules and the curricula of Foundation Degrees and reconfigured the teaching and learning methods accordingly. She also helped to carve pathways for holders of Foundation Degrees in Management and Management with Accounting to progress to undergraduate degree programmes at Honours level.

With the support of Linking London and Richard Carabine, Paz Estrella Tolentino played a pioneering role at Birkbeck in forging Academic Progression agreements with at least seven (7) Further Education colleges in Birkbeck’s geographical catchment area. Through these agreements, holders of relevant Level 3 qualifications in Business, Management or Accounting awarded by these colleges are able to gain admission or preferential access to admission to a range of undergraduate degree programmes at Birkbeck’s Department of Management.

She established the MSc International Management programme at Birkbeck together with Odile E. M. Janne in 2011/12.
