Funding and financial support

If you are planning to study one of our undergraduate courses, you may be eligible for financial support - find out more about undergraduate financial support here External Birkbeck Site.

The following information summarises the funding that is available at postgraduate and MPhil/PhD level. If you want to talk to someone about any of the following, please contact us.

ESRC Master’s Preparation for Doctoral Research

The following courses are recognised by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for the award of 1+3 studentships.

These studentships are designed to fund students for a four-year full-time (or six to seven years part-time) programme of postgraduate study combining a taught Master's degree and a PhD. The scholarships provide fees and maintenance (currently fees plus £12,500 per annum) for UK students, and fees only for non-UK students from European Union countries.

The deadline for receipt of applications to Birkbeck for those wishing to be considered to be put forward by us for an ESRC 1+3 Studentship is the second Friday in March for October entry.

ESRC Collaborative Case Research Studentships

Collaborative (CASE) research studentships are designed for students to carry out a research project at Birkbeck in collaboration with a company or organization.

  • At postgraduate level, they are available on a 1+3 basis.
  • At PhD level, they are available on a +3 basis.

Please note that there is a long lead time for these awards, and those interested in applying must contact us by the third Friday in October for entry on 1 October in the following year.

Economic and Social Research Council PhD studentships

To be eligible for these studentships, you must already have an ESRC-recognised Master's degree. These studentships are available for full-time and part-time study.

The deadline for receipt of applications to Birkbeck for those wishing to be considered to be put forward by us for an ESRC +3 PhD Studentship is the second Friday in March for October entry.

College Research Studentships

The Department has one CRS award each year that they can award to one home full-time or two home part-time PhD students, or one international student at any one time within the School.

It is standard practice within the School to hold CRS awards in reserve until the results of ESRC and ORS applications have been announced in August. Applicants who have been unable to secure funding through the ESRC or ORS are then offered a CRS award.

Overseas Research Students Award Scheme

Overseas Research Studentships External Birkbeck Site (ORS) awards are available for partial remission of tuition fees to international postgraduate students of outstanding merit and research potential

You will need to submit your application for this by 31 March for a programme of study starting the following October.

Please contact the Academic studentships team External Birkbeck Site if you want more information on this funding.
