Business Innovation (MSc, MRes)

Three streams are offered for both MSc (Master of Science) and MRes (Master by Research), with specialized focus on
~ Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management
~ E-business
~ International Technology Management

Why study Business Innovation (MSc, MRes) at Birkbeck?

Technological change and the digital economy raise new economic and managerial challenges for businesses and public and private sector organizations.

Birkbeck is a centre of excellence in cutting edge research and inspirational teaching on business innovation. The Department of Management at Birkbeck has offered business innovation related degrees (Pg Dip, MSc, and MRes) for more than 10 years. Hundreds of students have graduated from these degrees.

Birkbeck is a pioneer in E-business. We launched our (then e-commerce) degree already in 1999. About 350 students have graduated from this specialized programme.

The Business Innovation programmes at Birkbeck today (Entrepreneurship and innovation management; E-business; or International technology management) are designed for graduates who wish to develop a thorough understanding of the importance of innovation for rethinking management, business strategy, corporate assets, intellectual property rights, institutions, organizations, firms, entrepreneurship, and globalization in a changing world.

 

What will I be studying?

The programme of study varies depending on your area of specialization (Entrepreneurship and innovation management; E-business; or International technology management), and depending on the degree you enrol for (MSc - Master of Science, or MRes - Master by Research). Below is a rough guide of the subjects you will be studying (may vary slightly each year):

How long will it take?

1 year full time or 2 years part-time.

 

How often do I need to attend classes?

  • Part-time study: 2 evenings (6-9pm) a week.
  • Full-time study: 4 evenings (6-9pm) a week. Full-time students are sometimes required to attend afternoon classess (2-5pm) instead of evening classes.
  • Course runs from October to end of September, but classes ends in June. Summer period is used for dissertation research for full-time and final-year part-time students.

 

What qualifications do I need?

  • Good bachelor degree in management, economics or other subjects.
  • Work experience is acknowledged as a further qualification.
  • International students: English language requirements: IELTS at 6.5.

How will I be taught?

Students will be motivated by a variety of modes of study, including inspirational lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, presentations, course work, and more.

How will I be assessed?

A combination of exams, coursework and a dissertation.

The Business Innovation courses at Birkbeck helps you to succeed in a changing world, which demands new skills in the areas of innovation, the digital economy, entrepreneurship and globalization. It equips students with theories, principles and tools for analysing and coping with issues of business innovation. It is relevant for those who aspire to become managers, business analysts, industrialists, or deal with policy making. Our graduates go on to careers in management, local and national government, business and industry.
