Olga Blinova

BA Japanese and Management

After completing her A-levels, Olga decided that rather than enrolling on a full-time university degree like many of her classmates, she would prefer to enrol on a part-time course and study over four years, in the evenings at Birkbeck, University of London. She explains: 'I realised that by studying part-time in the evenings I would have the opportunity to use the daytimes to gain relevant work experience which would help me when I graduated.'

Now in her fourth year, Olga has worked as a project assistant for a translation company and is currently a Senior Document and Data Management Technician for an oil and construction company. She says: 'My jobs have given me the opportunity to put the things that I am learning at university into practice straight away. Seeing how different parts of the company work also helps me understand some of the concepts that we study on the course as well.

'Studying part-time means there is more diversity within the class groups. It is really useful for me to be studying with older students who are already established in their careers. Their professional experience means that they can offer good advice and guidance to younger classmates.

'I think that employers are definitely impressed by students who study part-time and work during their degrees. It shows that you take your career seriously and are taking opportunities to gain knowledge and experience. I believe the work experience that I already have will set me apart from other graduates.

'I would definitely recommend Birkbeck. It enables people to get a degree at the same time as gaining work experience, building careers or caring for families. I think that part-time study is a really good option for anyone at any stage of their life.'
