STORYTELLING

Birkbeck proudly presents its seventh series of public lectures, designed to share with a wider public some of the extraordinary intellectual activity fostered at the College. The talks are free to all, and last an hour. In Autumn 2009, we investigate different forms of storytelling in history, literature, children’s fiction and the theatre with some of Birkbeck’s most prominent connections into the vibrant literary and cultural life of the city.

KATE SUMMERSCALE & JULIA BELL

Storytelling in Fiction

Kate Summerscale is a journalist and author of the bestselling The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, which won the prestigious Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction in 2008. Julia Bell is the author of the novels Massive (2002) and Dirty Work (2008), and runs Birkbeck’s hugely successful MA in Creative Writing.

MICHAEL ROSEN

Storytelling and the Child
'No children's literature is an island, entire of itself;
how and why adults read, re-read and remember children's books'

Michael Rosen recently completed his stint as Children’s Laureate, part of his passionate commitment to poetry and education. He is a visiting professor in the department of English at Birkbeck, where he has taught for several years and is now setting up an MA in Children’s Fiction.

COLIN TEEVAN

Storytelling and the Theatre
'Stage, Story, Mind and Being: Kafka's Monkey, The Lion of Kabul and other recent work'

Colin Teevan is a playwright, dramaturg and educator. Plays staged in London this year include Kafka’s Monkey at the Young Vic and The Lion of Kabul at the Tricycle Theatre. He also works as a lecturer in Creative Writing at Birkbeck.
