Managing People and Performance
Overview
To support managers we have developed a two-day managing people and performance event. The event is aimed at managers in grades 6 to 8.
It covers the material in the Assistant School Manager and Team Leader events run for Schools in 2009 and 2010.
Aims and objectives
The event provides an opportunity to enhance and refresh participants’ people management skills. It is aimed at managers that have had little formal training, or managers who want a refresher on core skills. By the end of the event participants will have:
-
Reviewed the key skills needed by a modern people manager;
-
Discussed how to effectively motivate team members and developed strategies for the workplace;
-
Identified the features and qualities of high performance teams;
-
Understood the key principles of effective delegation and feedback and be able to implement them in the workplace;
-
Better understood their management style and be able to adopt a flexible style in the workplace;
-
Developed and practiced their skills in handling underperformance, poor conduct and difficult team members; and
-
Developed personal action plans.

The events will be jointly led by Richard Tickner, who has many years’ experience of running events at Birkbeck and other universities, and Neil O’Connor, Head of Learning and Organisational Development.
