Coaching Skills for Managers
Overview
This event provides staff with people management responsibilities, whether academic or support, the opportunity to develop and enhance their coaching skills. Coaching is an effective way of developing and managing others, building motivation and supporting career development.
Aims and objectives
The event will enable participants to develop the skills of collaborative coaching and effectively use coaching in their day-to-day work. It will be practical in approach.
By the end of the event participants will have:

Reviewed coaching and understood how coaching skills can be used in their support and management of others;

Discussed the difference between directive coaching (instruction) and non directive (collaborative) coaching;

Better understood their personal coaching style and be able to adopt a flexible style;

Developed the core skills of non-directive coaching – effective questioning, listening, supporting others and feedback;

Explored how coaching methods can be used to more effectively manage, engage and support staff;

Developed personal action plans.
The facilitators
The events will be led by Neil O’Connor, Head of Learning and Organisational Development, and Diane Hodgson, an external expert with many years’ experience working with universities.
Dates
The event comprises of a first day of skills development with a half day follow-up. The dates are as follows:
Thursday 8 December 2011 (0930-1630) with a follow up on Friday 11 May 2012 (0930-1245)
Wednesday 22 February 2012 (0930-1630) with a follow up on Wednesday 13 June 2012 (0930-1245)
